" My path to this point has been strenuous. From the day I expressed my goals, my teachers made it clear that I would never make to those spaces - that I wasn't welcome. Regardless of my straight-A status, it would simply not outshine the colour of my skin. If I want that to change, why not use my voice to force it" - Krystal Henry-Mathieu

My name is Krystal Henry-Mathieu, I am a master's student studying environmental applied science and management with a focus on sustainable energy.

Growing up I have always been a part of eco teams and other initiatives to help the environment. My desire to pursue a career in science was always there but many of my teachers made it clear that I would not be welcome in these spaces due to the colour of my skin. While I worked hard to ignore these voices in order to get where I am today, they were right about one thing – there certainly is not enough black female representation in these fields, and I would like for that to change. BLK Women in STEM is a platform that I have created to help inspire young girls to continue their pursuit in STEM but also to give them the guidance and mentorship along the way that I wish that I had.

I created STEM Magazine as a way to showcase some of the amazing black women in STEM that I have come across and truly believe their stories and guidance can help young girls reach their goals.

I want to give an opportunity to all black women to let their voices be heard, share their accomplishments as well as to discuss the barriers that had to be overcome to get there.

I truly believe that we can change the face of STEM fields as a community. Join us on this journey of diversifying STEM fields, we are in this together!
